The answer is very simple. Newgrounds counts plays as you visit the song's page to listen to it and downloads as you access the download link. Since there might be flash games or movies here that load their music by downloading it directly from the portal instead of including the song within the swf file this will also be counted as a download. And it will be counted each time the flash thing will load your song (maximum once per day per user). So, congratulations, someone has used your song in a flash game, a flash movie, or just shared the download link around the web. Who knows (I don't know btw ;) ).
